VPN or Firewall Blocking Print Traffic
Can't print when VPN is connected or after installing security software? These block local network access. Here's how to print without compromising security.
What's Happening
You could print before, but now that you're using a VPN for work or installed firewall/security software, the printer has vanished. VPNs route your traffic through a remote server, bypassing your local network where the printer lives. Firewalls can block the ports printers use to communicate.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Does printing work when VPN is disconnected? If so, VPN is the issue.
- Did you recently install security software? Check if it has a firewall component.
- Is this a work VPN or personal VPN? Work VPNs may have more restrictions.
- Can you access other local devices? Like your router's admin page?
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Enable Split Tunneling (VPN)
Split tunneling lets local traffic bypass the VPN:
- Open your VPN application settings
- Look for "Split Tunneling" or "LAN Access" options
- Enable access to local network or add your printer's IP to exclusions
- If it's a work VPN, you may need IT to enable this
Fix 2: Disconnect VPN Temporarily
- Disconnect the VPN when you need to print
- Print your documents
- Reconnect the VPN
- Not ideal, but works when split tunneling isn't available
Fix 3: Add Firewall Exceptions
- Open your firewall/security software
- Look for application exceptions or rules
- Add exceptions for:
- The print spooler service (spoolsv.exe)
- Your printer manufacturer's software
- Port 9100 (standard print port)
- Restart the print spooler service
Fix 4: Windows Firewall Settings
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection
- Click "Allow an app through firewall"
- Make sure printer-related apps are allowed on Private networks
- Enable "File and Printer Sharing"
If Nothing Worked
For strict work VPNs, you may need to use a USB connection for printing while connected. Some organizations intentionally block local network access for security. Contact your IT department for approved solutions.
When to Call a Pro
Balancing security requirements with functionality can be tricky. A technician can help configure your setup to maintain security while allowing necessary local network access.
