Streaks or Lines Through Prints
Getting horizontal or vertical lines through your prints? This print quality issue is usually caused by dirty or clogged components. Here's how to fix it.
What's Happening
Your prints have lines running through them - horizontal stripes, vertical streaks, or both. Instead of clean, solid text and images, you're getting banded, striped output that looks like something went wrong. And it did. For inkjet printers, this usually means clogged printhead nozzles. For laser printers, it's often a dirty or failing drum, toner distribution problem, or contamination in the paper path.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Are the lines horizontal or vertical? Direction tells you where to look.
- Are they consistent on every page? Or random and changing position?
- Inkjet or laser printer? The cause and fix differ significantly.
- Have you recently changed cartridges? New cartridges can have protective strips left on.
- Print a test page from the printer itself - does it show lines too?
Step-by-Step Fixes
For Inkjet Printers:
Fix 1: Run the Printhead Cleaning Utility
- Go to your printer's maintenance menu (on the printer or through software)
- Run the "Clean Printhead" or "Head Cleaning" option
- Print a nozzle check pattern
- If gaps remain, run cleaning again (up to 3 times)
- Wait 30 minutes between cleaning cycles to avoid waste
Fix 2: Check for Clogged Nozzles
- Print a nozzle check pattern
- Look for missing colors or gaps in the pattern
- If cleaning doesn't help, the printhead may need manual cleaning
- Use distilled water on a lint-free cloth to gently clean the nozzle plate
For Laser Printers:
Fix 1: Check the Toner Cartridge
- Remove the toner cartridge
- Gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner
- Check for any visible damage or leaking toner
- Reinstall and try printing
Fix 2: Inspect and Clean the Drum
- Remove the drum unit (it may be integrated with toner)
- Look for scratches, marks, or debris on the green drum surface
- Never touch the drum with bare hands
- Gently wipe with a dry, soft cloth if there's visible debris
- Replace drum if it's scratched or worn
If Nothing Worked
For inkjets with persistent clogs, the printhead may be beyond cleaning and need replacement (expensive) or the printer may not be worth fixing. For lasers, try a new toner cartridge and drum unit - the old ones may be at end of life.
When to Call a Pro
Recurring streaks after cleaning and part replacement suggest internal contamination or component failure. Laser printers especially may have fuser issues or internal toner spills that need professional cleaning.
