Ink Cartridges Drying Out From Infrequent Use
Don't print often and your cartridges keep drying out? Here's how to prevent ink from clogging and what to do when it happens.
What's Happening
You only print occasionally - maybe once a month or less - and when you do need to print, the output is streaky, faded, or nothing comes out at all. The ink in the cartridges and printhead has dried up from sitting unused. This is one of the biggest drawbacks of inkjet printers.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- How long since you last printed? More than 2-3 weeks increases drying risk.
- What does a nozzle check look like? Print one to see which colors are affected.
- Is the printer in a hot or dry location? Environment affects drying speed.
- Are your cartridges low? Less ink = faster drying.
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Run Multiple Cleaning Cycles
- Access printer maintenance in settings
- Run the printhead cleaning utility
- Print a nozzle check
- If gaps remain, wait 10-15 minutes and clean again
- Repeat up to 3 times - the cleaning pushes fresh ink through
Fix 2: Deep Cleaning (if available)
- Some printers have "Power Clean" or "Deep Clean" options
- This uses more ink but is more effective for dried heads
- Run once, wait 30 minutes, then test
- Only use if regular cleaning doesn't work - it consumes a lot of ink
Fix 3: Soak the Printhead (removable heads only)
- If your printer has a removable printhead (some HP, Canon)
- Remove it carefully
- Place nozzles on paper towels dampened with warm distilled water
- Let sit for 1-2 hours
- Gently blot dry and reinstall
Fix 4: Prevention - Print Regularly
- Print something at least once every 1-2 weeks
- Even a simple color test page helps
- This keeps ink flowing through the nozzles
- Some printers do automatic maintenance - keep them plugged in
If Nothing Worked
Severely dried printheads may be beyond recovery. For printers with cartridge-integrated printheads (some HP DeskJets), new cartridges include new printheads. For permanent-head printers (Epson, Canon PIXMA Pro), you may face expensive printhead replacement or need a new printer.
When to Call a Pro
If you've tried all cleaning options and the head is still clogged, professional ultrasonic cleaning can sometimes save a printhead. A tech can also advise whether repair is cost-effective vs. replacement.
