Can't Print From iPhone/Android Using AirPrint or App
Phone won't print to your wireless printer? Mobile printing requires specific setup. Here's how to print from iPhone and Android devices.
What's Happening
You can print fine from your computer, but your iPhone or Android phone just can't find or connect to the printer. Mobile printing seems like it should be simple, but there are multiple ways it can fail - from network issues to compatibility problems.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Are phone and printer on the same Wi-Fi? Check both are connected to the same network.
- Is your phone on 5GHz, printer on 2.4GHz? Some routers isolate bands.
- Does the printer support AirPrint (iPhone) or Mopria (Android)?
- Is the printer powered on and not sleeping?
- Did you try the manufacturer's print app?
Step-by-Step Fixes
For iPhone (AirPrint)
- Make sure the printer supports AirPrint (check the specs)
- Connect iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer
- Open any app (Safari, Photos, Notes) and tap the Share icon
- Tap "Print" - iPhone should find AirPrint printers automatically
- If not found, restart both printer and iPhone
- Check that router isn't blocking device discovery (AP isolation off)
For Android (Mopria/Default Print Service)
- Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Printing
- Enable "Default Print Service" (or download it from Play Store)
- Or download and enable "Mopria Print Service"
- Open any app and select Print from the menu
- Android should discover the printer
Fix 3: Install Manufacturer App
- Download the printer manufacturer's app:
- HP Smart (for HP printers)
- Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY (for Canon)
- Epson iPrint (for Epson)
- Brother iPrint&Scan (for Brother)
- The app often finds printers that the default service misses
- Follow in-app setup instructions
Fix 4: Enable Wi-Fi Direct
If network printing won't work:
- Enable Wi-Fi Direct on your printer (check menu/settings)
- On your phone, connect to the printer's Wi-Fi Direct network
- Use the manufacturer app or default print service to print
- Note: Wi-Fi Direct disconnects you from your regular Wi-Fi
If Nothing Worked
Check if your router has "AP Isolation" or "Client Isolation" enabled - this blocks devices from seeing each other. Disable this setting for your main network, or switch to a network without isolation.
When to Call a Pro
Complex network setups (guest networks, mesh systems, enterprise routers) may need configuration changes to allow mobile printing. A technician can adjust settings while maintaining your network security.
