How to Fix Slow Printing for Large PDFs and Photos
Your printer crawls when printing large PDFs or high-resolution photos, and we'll show you how to speed it up.
What's Happening
When you send a large PDF or high-resolution photo to your printer, it takes forever to start printing or prints one page every few minutes. This is usually caused by insufficient printer memory, complex graphics requiring heavy processing, or incorrect print settings sending too much data. The good news is that most slow printing issues can be fixed with simple adjustments to your print settings or a memory upgrade.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Try a smaller file – Print a simple text document to verify the printer itself works normally
- Check printer memory – Look up your printer model online to see how much RAM it has (many budget printers have only 32-64MB)
- Use wired connection – If printing over WiFi, try a USB cable to rule out network speed issues
- Check print queue – Make sure there aren't multiple large jobs stacked up waiting
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Reduce Print Quality and Resolution
Lower quality settings require less processing and memory.
- Open the document you want to print
- Click File > Print
- Click Printer Properties or Preferences
- Look for Quality or Resolution settings
- Change from "Best" or "High" to "Normal" or "Draft"
- For photos, try 300 DPI instead of 600 or 1200 DPI
- Click OK and try printing
You'll likely not notice a quality difference for most documents, and printing will be significantly faster.
Fix 2: Print as Image (For PDFs)
Complex PDFs with fonts and vectors can overwhelm printer memory. Printing as an image simplifies processing.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Click File > Print
- Click Advanced in the print dialog
- Check the box for Print as Image
- Click OK, then Print
Note: This may reduce text sharpness slightly, but it dramatically speeds up printing for complex documents.
Fix 3: Update or Reinstall Printer Driver
Outdated drivers can cause inefficient data processing.
- Go to your printer manufacturer's website
- Navigate to Support or Drivers
- Enter your printer model number
- Download the latest driver for your operating system
- Run the installer and follow the prompts
- Restart your computer
- Try printing again
Fix 4: Compress or Optimize Photos Before Printing
Many phones capture 10+ megapixel images that are overkill for printing.
- Open your photo in an image editor (Windows Photos, Paint, or free tools like GIMP)
- Resize the image to match your print size (e.g., 8x10 inches at 300 DPI = 2400x3000 pixels)
- Save with moderate JPEG compression
- Print the optimized version
A 20MB RAW photo can be reduced to 2-3MB without visible quality loss at print sizes.
Fix 5: Upgrade Printer Memory (Business Printers)
If you regularly print large documents, adding RAM can permanently solve the issue.
- Check your printer manual or manufacturer website for supported memory upgrades
- Purchase compatible printer RAM (usually SO-DIMM modules)
- Power off and unplug the printer
- Locate the memory slot (usually under a panel on the side or back)
- Install the RAM module following manufacturer instructions
- Power on and verify the new memory is recognized in printer settings menu
This is most cost-effective for laser printers you plan to keep for years.
If Nothing Worked
If printing is still unbearably slow after trying these fixes, the issue might be hardware limitations. Budget inkjet printers often have very limited processing power and can't handle complex graphics efficiently. Consider whether the printer is appropriate for your needs. If you frequently print large PDFs or photos, you may need a model with more RAM and a faster processor. Also check if your computer itself is slow—an underpowered PC can bottleneck the print spooling process.
When to Call a Pro
If your printer suddenly became slow (it used to print large files fine), this could indicate failing hardware, corrupted firmware, or network issues requiring diagnostic tools. If you've upgraded printer memory but it's not recognized, improper installation can damage the printer. If print jobs freeze halfway through or the printer displays memory errors, professional diagnosis may be needed to determine if repair or replacement makes more sense.
