• No chip/firmware issues

Cons:

• Significantly more expensive (often 3-5x the cost)
• Cost-per-page can be high on low-yield standard cartridges

The Warranty Question

Using third-party cartridges does NOT void your printer warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (in the US). However, if a third-party cartridge causes damage, that specific damage wouldn't be covered.
