Tray 2 Works But Tray 1 Always Jams
One tray works fine but another constantly jams? The problem tray likely has worn parts or needs adjustment. Here's how to fix it.
What's Happening
You've got a printer with multiple paper trays, and one works perfectly while another causes constant jams. This is actually helpful for troubleshooting - it tells us the printer itself is fine, and the problem is isolated to one specific tray. The problematic tray likely has worn components, incorrect adjustment, or accumulated debris.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Is the problem tray inserted correctly? Remove and firmly reinsert it.
- Are the paper guides adjusted properly? They should match the paper size exactly.
- Is the same paper type in both trays? Test with identical paper to rule that out.
- Is there any visible damage? Cracked guides, broken clips, warped plastic.
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Clean the Problem Tray's Pickup Rollers
- Remove the problem tray
- Look for the pickup roller(s) - they're usually visible in the cavity
- Each tray has its own rollers that can wear at different rates
- Clean them with a damp lint-free cloth
- Rotate and clean the entire surface
- Let dry before reinserting the tray
Fix 2: Compare Tray Setup
- Remove both trays and compare them side by side
- Check that all guides and clips are in the same positions
- Look for any damaged or missing parts on the problem tray
- Make sure the base plate (the spring-loaded bottom) moves freely
Fix 3: Check the Tray's Separation Pad
- The separation pad prevents multiple sheets from feeding
- Find the small rubber or cork pad opposite where the pickup roller contacts
- If it's worn smooth or damaged, it may need replacement
- Separation pads are usually cheap and easy to swap
Fix 4: Inspect the Pickup Roller Condition
- Compare the pickup roller in the problem tray to the working tray
- A worn roller will be shiny and smooth instead of slightly tacky
- Rollers can wear unevenly between trays based on usage
- Replacement rollers for specific trays are usually available
If Nothing Worked
As a workaround, you can configure applications and the Windows default to use the working tray. But this doesn't fix the underlying issue - eventually you'll want the other tray working too, especially if you want to load different paper sizes.
When to Call a Pro
If the tray itself is damaged or internal components are worn beyond cleaning, replacement parts may be needed. A technician can also check if there's a sensor or mechanical issue in how that specific tray engages with the printer.
