Printer Won't Pick Up Paper From Tray
Printer tries to print but won't grab any paper? The rollers are probably dirty or worn. Here's how to get paper feeding again.
What's Happening
You hit print, the printer makes all the right noises, but no paper comes out. You can see the pickup roller spinning (or trying to), but it just won't grab the paper. This is one of the most common printer problems, and it's almost always fixable. The culprit is usually dirty or worn pickup rollers that have lost their grip.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Is there paper in the tray? (Yes, this happens more than you'd think.)
- Is the paper loaded correctly? Pushed all the way back with guides properly adjusted.
- Is the paper stuck together? Fan the stack before loading.
- Is the tray inserted all the way? Some trays have a locking mechanism.
- Is there a paper jam blocking the path? Check for stuck paper first.
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Clean the Pickup Rollers
This fixes the problem 80% of the time:
- Turn off and unplug the printer
- Remove the paper tray
- Locate the pickup roller(s) - usually visible from underneath or inside
- Dampen a lint-free cloth with water (add a drop of isopropyl alcohol for stubborn residue)
- Rotate the roller by hand while wiping it thoroughly
- Clean until no more residue comes off
- Let dry completely before testing
Fix 2: Reset the Paper Tray
- Remove all paper from the tray
- Remove the tray completely from the printer
- Check for any debris inside the tray slot
- Load a fresh, properly-fanned stack of paper (not too full)
- Reinsert the tray firmly until it clicks
- Make sure paper guides are snug against the paper
Fix 3: Try Different Paper
- Remove current paper
- Use a fresh ream of standard copy paper
- Make sure paper isn't damp, curled, or damaged
- Load about 50 sheets (don't overfill)
- Test printing
Fix 4: Check for Worn Rollers
If cleaning doesn't help:
- Examine the pickup rollers closely
- Rollers should be slightly tacky and have texture
- Shiny, smooth, or cracked rollers need replacement
- Pickup roller kits are usually inexpensive ($10-30)
- Installation is often user-doable with YouTube guides
If Nothing Worked
The pickup solenoid or clutch mechanism might be failing - you might hear clicking but the roller doesn't engage. There may also be a paper tray sensor issue. Check if manual feed works even when tray feed doesn't.
When to Call a Pro
If the rollers look fine and are clean but still won't pick up paper, internal mechanisms may need repair. For high-volume printers, professional maintenance can prevent this issue from recurring.
