Printhead Clogs Causing Missing Lines on Nozzle Test
Nozzle check showing gaps and missing segments? Your printhead is clogged. Here's how to clear it and get all nozzles firing again.
What's Happening
When you print a nozzle check pattern, you see gaps, missing segments, or entire colors not printing. This means some of the tiny nozzles in your printhead are clogged - ink has dried or debris is blocking them. Clogged nozzles cause streaks, color shifts, and poor print quality.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Print a nozzle check pattern - identify exactly which colors/sections are affected.
- Is it just one color or multiple? One color = specific cartridge issue; multiple = printhead problem.
- How long since you last printed? Infrequent printing causes clogs.
- Did you recently change cartridges? Air bubbles can cause temporary gaps.
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Automatic Printhead Cleaning
- Access printer maintenance (from software or printer menu)
- Select "Clean Printhead" or "Head Cleaning"
- Run the cleaning cycle
- Print a nozzle check to assess results
- If gaps remain, wait 10 minutes and repeat (max 3 times)
Fix 2: Power/Deep Clean
- If regular cleaning doesn't work, look for "Power Clean" or "Deep Clean"
- This uses significantly more ink but applies more pressure
- Run once, then wait 30 minutes
- Print nozzle check - improvement should be visible
Fix 3: Let Ink Soak (Wait Method)
- After running cleaning cycles, turn off the printer
- Leave it off for 8-24 hours
- This lets cleaning fluid work on dried ink
- Turn on, run another cleaning, and check
Fix 4: Manual Printhead Cleaning
For severe clogs (if printhead is removable):
- Remove the printhead (check your manual for procedure)
- Hold under warm running water, nozzle-side down
- Soak in warm distilled water for 10-30 minutes
- Blot dry on paper towels
- Let air dry completely, then reinstall
If Nothing Worked
Some clogs are permanent, especially in printers that sat unused for months. For printers with integrated cartridge/printhead combos, new cartridges give you new nozzles. For permanent printheads, professional ultrasonic cleaning is a last resort before replacement.
When to Call a Pro
Ultrasonic printhead cleaning is available from some repair services and can recover seemingly-dead heads. However, if the printhead is physically damaged or the cost of repair exceeds printer value, replacement may be more practical.
