
How to Remove Old Printer Drivers and Phantom Printers
Your printer list is cluttered with old printers that won't delete or keep reappearing, and we'll show you how to clean them out completely.
What's Happening
You've replaced printers over the years, and now your printer list is a mess. There are printers you haven't owned in years, duplicates named "HP LaserJet Copy 2" and "Copy 3," printers that show "offline" that you can't delete, or printers that disappear when you remove them but come back after a restart. These "phantom printers" happen when Windows doesn't fully remove old drivers and configuration files. They clutter your print dialog, slow down the spooler service, and sometimes cause conflicts with current printers. Time for a deep clean.
Quick Checks (Do These First)
- Identify keepers – Make a list of printers you actually use so you don't accidentally delete them
- Check if they're network printers – Some printers reappear because they're shared on the network
- Look for duplicates – Printers with "Copy 2" or "Copy 3" are usually safe to remove
- Test current printers – Print a test page from printers you want to keep before cleaning
Step-by-Step Fixes
Fix 1: Remove Printers Through Settings
Start with the normal removal process.
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
- Click each old or phantom printer
- Click Remove device
- If it says "In use" or won't delete, move to the next fix
- After removing all possible printers, restart your computer
- Check if any reappeared
Fix 2: Stop Print Spooler and Remove Stubborn Printers
Stopping the spooler service allows you to delete "in use" printers.
- Press Windows + R
- Type
services.mscand press Enter - Find Print Spooler in the list
- Right-click it and select Stop
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
- Right-click stubborn printers and select Remove device
- They should now delete without errors
- Go back to Services and Start the Print Spooler again
Fix 3: Delete Printer Drivers Completely
Removing the printer doesn't remove its driver, which can cause it to reappear.
- Press Windows + R
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2and press Enter - The Print Server Properties window opens
- Click the Drivers tab
- You'll see all installed printer drivers
- Select an old driver you don't need
- Click Remove
- Choose Remove driver and driver package
- Click OK to confirm
- Repeat for all old drivers
- Close the window and restart your computer
Important: Only remove drivers for printers you no longer use. Removing an active printer's driver will break it.
Fix 4: Clear Printer Registry Entries (Advanced)
Phantom printers sometimes leave registry entries that cause them to reappear.
- Press Windows + R
- Type
regeditand press Enter (click Yes if prompted) - Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers - In the left pane, you'll see folders for each printer
- Find the old printer entries
- Right-click the printer folder and select Delete
- Confirm deletion
- Also check:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections - Delete old printer entries here too
- Close Registry Editor
- Restart your computer
Warning: Be very careful in the registry. Only delete printer entries, nothing else. Make a backup first (File > Export).
Fix 5: Remove Printer Queue Files
Sometimes stuck print jobs prevent proper removal.
- Stop the Print Spooler (see Fix 2)
- Open File Explorer
- Navigate to:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS - Delete all files in this folder
- Also go to:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64(or \w32 for 32-bit systems) - Look for folders named after old printer manufacturers
- Delete folders for printers you've removed
- Start the Print Spooler service again
Fix 6: Use Print Management Tool for Complete Cleanup
Windows' built-in Print Management tool offers more control.
- Press Windows + R
- Type
printmanagement.mscand press Enter - Expand Print Servers > Your Computer Name
- Click Printers
- Right-click old printers and select Delete
- Click Drivers
- Right-click unused drivers and select Remove Driver Package
- Click Ports
- Delete unused ports (USB001 for disconnected printers, old IP addresses, etc.)
- Restart your computer
Fix 7: Prevent Network Printers from Auto-Reinstalling
If printers keep coming back, Windows might be auto-detecting them on the network.
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
- Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer
- Under "Download over metered connections" turn off printer auto-installation
- Open Services (services.msc)
- Find Downloaded Maps Manager
- Double-click it and set Startup type to Disabled (this prevents auto-discovery)
Note: This is only for persistent phantom printers. Don't do this if you regularly add new printers.
If Nothing Worked
If printers still reappear after registry cleaning and driver removal, they may be deployed via Group Policy (in business environments) or managed by your IT department. Check with IT before making changes. For extremely stubborn cases, Microsoft's Print Management troubleshooter can sometimes identify hidden references: Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Printer. As a nuclear option, you can reset the print spooler completely by stopping the service, renaming the entire spool folder, and restarting—but this removes ALL printers, so you'll need to reinstall the ones you use.
